DIY Catch-All Tray for Dad | Easy Personalized Father’s Day Gift

Make something meaningful for Dad with this easy Catch-All Tray tutorial! Whether he uses it to hold his keys and wallet, corral TV remotes, or serve up a cozy Father’s Day breakfast, it’s sure to be a hit. Whether you're a seasoned sewist or trying something new, this project is a fun, functional way to say thank you. Happy Father’s Day!


What We Used:
★ Nifty Notions 14” square ruler
★ Quilters Select rotary cutter
★ 100 weight Metrosene thread
★ 1 yard of fabric
★ 1/2 yard of fusible batting

If You’re Going to Embroider:
★ 40 weight embroidery thread for lettering
★ 60 weight embroidery thread bobbin
★ Water soluble topper

What To Cut:
★ 2 pieces of fabric 14” square
★ 1 piece of fusible batting 14” square
★ 2 pieces of fabric 28x8”
★ 1 piece of fusible batting 28x8”

Step-by-Step:
Long Strip (removable!)
1. Press fusible batting to the wrong side of one of your 28x8” strips.
2. Clip the second 28x8 strip, right sides together, with the batting facing up.
3. Sew together using a 1/4“ seam allowance. Start sewing in the middle of the long side, making sure to leave around a 2” opening to turn right side out.
4. Turn right side out. Use a corner turner to poke out corners.
5. Top stitch the opening and continue all the way around.

Main Project
1. Press fusible batting to the wrong side of one of your 14” squares.
2. If adding embroidery, hoop the 14” fabric and batting and stitch out. We embroidered “Dad’s Things” into our project.
3. Clip the second 14” square, right sides together, with the batting facing up.
4. Sew together using a 1/4“ seam allowance. Start sewing in the middle of a side, making sure to leave around a 2” opening to turn right side out.
5. Turn right side out. Use a corner turner to poke out corners.
6. Top stitch the opening and continue all the way around.
7. To sew the corners, measure 2 ¾” one each side of the point. Match your markings and sew down, forming a triangle at 2 ¾”. Repeat this process for each corner.
